# Medicare Hospital Stays: Part A Coverage Explained
Understanding how Medicare covers hospital stays helps you prepare financially and know what to expect. Part A is your hospital insurance, covering inpatient care, skilled nursing facilities, and more.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient: Why It Matters
> About 54% of beneficiaries are in Medicare Advantage, where hospital cost-sharing follows plan rules; Original Medicare uses the Part A deductible and coinsurance. (Source: CMS / KFF, 2024.)
Inpatient Status
- Formally admitted to the hospital
- Doctor's order for inpatient admission
- Part A coverage applies
- Qualifies you for skilled nursing facility coverage afterward
Observation Status
- Technically outpatient, even if you stay overnight
- Part B coverage applies (higher cost-sharing)
- Does NOT qualify you for SNF coverage
- Hospital must inform you of observation status within 36 hours
Ask about your status: If you're in the hospital, ask whether you're admitted as inpatient or under observation.

Medicare Advantage Hospital Coverage
MA plans must cover at least what Original Medicare covers, but cost-sharing differs:
Common MA Hospital Costs:
- Fixed copay per day (often $200-$400/day for first few days)
- Out-of-pocket maximum protects you from unlimited costs
- Some plans have $0 hospital days
Check your MA plan's specific hospital benefits before any planned procedure.
Tips for Hospital Stays
1. Ask about admission status - Inpatient vs. observation affects your coverage 2. Know your costs - Understand your deductible and coinsurance 3. Keep records - Document your admission date and status 4. Ask about discharge planning - Understand SNF coverage if needed 5. Review bills carefully - Hospital billing errors are common
Planning for Potential Hospital Costs

- Consider Medigap to cover gaps
- Understand there's no out-of-pocket maximum
With Medigap:
- Most plans cover Part A costs
- Predictable expenses
- No out-of-pocket maximum, but comprehensive coverage
With Medicare Advantage:
- Know your plan's hospital copays
- Benefit from annual out-of-pocket maximum
- In-network requirements apply
