Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Costs

Medigap (Medicare Supplement) trades a higher monthly premium for far more predictable costs. Because the benefits are standardized by the federal government, the real question is not which plan covers more — it is what drives the premium, and how to shop for the lowest price on the coverage you want.

What you pay with Medigap

With Medigap you pay your Part B premium plus a monthly Medigap premium. In exchange, your supplement covers much of the cost-sharing Original Medicare leaves behind — the Part A deductible, Part B coinsurance, and more, depending on the plan letter. With a comprehensive plan like Plan G, your predictable yearly cost is essentially your premiums plus the once-a-year Part B deductible.

What drives your premium

  • Plan letter. More comprehensive plans (like Plan G) cost more than lighter ones (like Plan N).
  • Your age. Most plans price by age, and the method matters (see below).
  • Location. Local medical costs and competition move premiums up or down.
  • Tobacco use and, in some cases, gender.
  • The rating method: community-rated (same price regardless of age), issue-age (based on your age when you buy), or attained-age (rises as you get older).

The smart way to shop

Because a Plan G is a Plan G everywhere, comparing the same plan letter across insurers is an apples-to-apples price comparison — the cheapest one wins with no benefit trade-off. The best time to buy is your one-time Medigap open enrollment window, when you cannot be turned down for health reasons. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Medigap plan cost?

It varies widely by plan letter, your age, your location, and the insurer’s rating method. Plan G is the most popular comprehensive option for new enrollees. Because benefits are standardized, the smartest way to shop is to compare quotes for the same plan letter across insurers.

Why do two people pay different Medigap premiums for the same plan?

A Plan G is identical in benefits no matter who sells it, but the premium is set by each insurer and approved at the state level. Age, location, tobacco use, and the rating method (community, issue-age, or attained-age) all affect the price.

Do I still pay the Part B premium if I have Medigap?

Yes. Medigap works alongside Original Medicare, so you keep paying your Part B premium plus the Medigap premium. In return, Medigap covers much of the cost-sharing Original Medicare leaves you.

When is Medigap cheapest to buy?

During your one-time Medigap open enrollment window — the six months starting when you are 65 and enrolled in Part B — insurers cannot deny you or charge more for health reasons. Outside that window, medical underwriting can raise your price or limit your options.
