Can I Keep My Doctor on Medicare?

Whether you can keep your doctor depends on the type of Medicare coverage you choose. With Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you can see any provider in the country who accepts Medicare, and the large majority of physicians do. There are no networks, so you generally do not have to switch doctors.

Medicare Advantage plans work differently. These plans contract with networks of doctors and hospitals. HMO plans usually require you to use in-network providers except in emergencies, while PPO plans cover out-of-network care at a higher cost. Before enrolling in any Medicare Advantage plan, it is wise to check the plan's provider directory and call your doctor's office to confirm participation, since networks can change.

If keeping a specific doctor matters to you, make a list of every provider you want to keep and verify their status before you enroll. A licensed Medicare advisor can help you compare plans and check whether your doctors are in-network, so you can make a confident decision that fits your care needs.

Keep in mind that networks and Medicare participation can change from year to year, so it is worth rechecking each fall during open enrollment, especially if you are on a Medicare Advantage plan. Confirming your providers annually helps you avoid surprises and unexpected out-of-network charges, and it ensures your coverage continues to support the care relationships that matter most to you.
