Guaranteed Renewable

Guaranteed renewable means an insurer cannot cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium, even if your health changes. The insurer can raise premiums for a whole class of policyholders but cannot single you out.

Understanding Guaranteed Renewable

Guaranteed renewable means that, as long as you pay your premiums, your insurance company cannot cancel your Medigap policy or refuse to renew it — even if your health declines or you develop expensive conditions. All standardized Medigap policies sold today are guaranteed renewable by law.

For beneficiaries, this is an important protection: once you are approved for a Medigap plan, your coverage is locked in for life regardless of new diagnoses. The insurer can still raise premiums, but only for an entire class of policyholders (for example, everyone in your plan and rating area), not for you individually because you got sick or filed claims.

For example, if you develop a serious illness after buying Plan G, the insurer must keep renewing your coverage at the same rate it charges all other Plan G holders in your group — it cannot single you out or drop you.
